So, you have lots of questions about what affects certain things have on your SEO strategy?
SEO can certainly be confusing, especially when you're first starting out or trying a brand new ranking tactic.
I'm going to just list the questions below, with my answers. I'll do my best to make sure the answers clearly demonstrate how the different actions might affect the search engine optimization of your site.
At the bottom, there's a Comment box, and I'd love for you to ask any additional questions, or leave your own comments or beliefs about how these actions might affect your SEO.
Do click through rates affect SEO?
Yes. I don't believe Google has ever acknowledged this publicly, but in a recent court case, evidence was presented in the courtroom that shows that Google uses signals from clicked links to determine which sites to rank higher. There are other user engagement signals as well, but click through rate (CTR) is definitely one of them.
Do curse words affect SEO?
No. I don't think the content of the page, unless it is specifically targeted to children, would be a direct ranking factor. That being said, if your audience didn't like the curse words on the page, and it affected the session engagement time, then it certain could have a secondary effect on your ranking position.

Do drop down menus affect SEO?
No. Not in the sense that having a drop down menu vs. not having a drop down menu would influence your ranking. If the menu isn't properly coded, then I can see a potential for crawling issues or user confusion, which could have a secondary affect on your rank position.

Do filenames affect SEO?
Yes, for images, filenames are important and help Google to classify them correctly. For other files, it's probably not as important, as long as Google can read the content of those files. For images, you'll want to use descriptive keywords for the filename. You can use hyphens to separate keywords in the filename.

Does metadata affect SEO?
Yes, metadata does affect SEO. I will answer the meta title question separately, but it is definitely one of the most important onpage ranking factors. The meta keywords tag doesn't seem to affect rankings much. The meta description tag may not affect rankings directly, but by causing a higher click through rate (CTR) when used as the snippet of text for the search result, it would have a secondary effect on search rankings.
